My mom used to just shrug if one of us complained that a carrot pulled fresh from the garden still had dirt on it. She’d say “You’ve got to eat a peck of dirt before you die,” and walk away. I had no idea — still don’t — what a peck is, but what with the abundance of dirty veg I ate as a kid and following the five-second rule ever since, I’m likely well on my way.All that sanitizing of everything a kid touches may, in fact, be related to all sorts of health problems.
“Little children need to be exposed to abundant microbes to develop normally,” writes Marie-Claire Arrieta, assistant professor at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. The co-author of Let Them Eat Dirt: Saving your Child from an Oversanitized World offers a number of suggestions to encourage a nice healthy microbiome in your kids.
Speaking of which, your kids don’t need to wash their hands every time they turn around. Arrieta advises washing their paws before eating, after using the loo, cleaning up after a pet or playing in a sandbox . As for toys, they only need a good scrubbing with soap and water if they look really dirty or some snotty-nosed playmate has coughed all over them.
Or suck on it, in the case of soothers. Swedish researchers found that babies whose parents cleaned pacifiers by popping them into their own mouths had a “significantly lower risk” of developing an allergy when they were two or three years old. “It seems when you share your mouth microbes with a child you’re strengthening their immune system and preventing allergies,” says Arrieta.
