UCP activists want the controversial MLA back in the party's benches, but the premier is wary of her becoming part of fall's legislature debates on hormone treatments, pronouns.Alberta Premier Danielle Smith told a UCP event that she doesn't want Jennifer Johnson's past comments to become part of upcoming debates about changes to transgender and parental rights policies.

"I think she doesn't want this fall debate to be about her comments during the election. I think she wants it to be about us passing the policy," the premier told the Red Deer crowd. In September 2022, before Johnson became a UCP candidate, she spoke at an event in Stettler about the education system. She apologized for her comments when they emerged during last year's spring election campaign, but amid backlash against the party and its candidate,Smith shuts door on caucus seat for UCP candidate who compared transgender children to feces in food
