Two traditional public utility jeepney (TPUJ) drivers in Lapu-Lapu City, Philippines, threatened a lawyer with a knife and a barbecue stick during a road rage incident. The altercation occurred due to one driver attempting to overtake despite heavy traffic caused by an accident. Both drivers, including the son of one TPUJ driver, became enraged and threatened the lawyer, who remained in his vehicle and filed a police report.

TWO drivers of traditional public utility jeepney (TPUJ) have threatened to stab a lawyer during a road rage incident in Lapu-Lapu City. This led to Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan to urge motorists to stay calm and avoid actions that could escalate road tensions.Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO) spokesperson Christian Torres told reporters on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024, that the incident occurred last Dec. 16 at around 3 p.m in Soong, Barangay Mactan.

It involved a private vehicle driven by a lawyer and two TPUJs. Torres said the TPUJ driver wanted to overtake, but the vehicle ahead of him, which was driven by the lawyer, did not allow him, considering there was an accident in the area.“The multicab driver wanted to overtake, but there was an accident ahead, causing heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic. The driver insisted on overtaking, but the attorney told him not to because it wouldn’t make a difference due to the traffic,” said Torres in Cebuano. “Even if he hurried, they’d still be stuck in traffic. Allowing him to counterflow would only worsen the situation. So, the private vehicle didn’t give way, leading to a heated confrontation where the multicab driver got out of his vehicle,” Torres added. Torres said the road rage incident escalated when the son of the TPUJ driver, who was also driving nearby, also became enraged. He said both drivers threatened to stab the lawyer with a knife and a barbecue stick. The LCPO also reported that the suspects damaged the vehicle, allegedly striking it to provoke the private vehicle owner to step out.The lawyer remained in his vehicle and instead filed a police blotter at the Lapu-Lapu Police Station 2 later that evening, providing evidence from his dashcam, including the plate numbers of the suspects’ vehicles. Charges After the incident went viral on social media, along with the dashcam footage of the attack and threats, the two TPUJ drivers eventually surrendered at Lapu-Lapu Police Station
