Jason Kenney sworn in as Alberta’s 18th premier

Jason Kenney has been sworn in as Alberta’s 18th premier, appointing a cabinet on a mandate to spark Alberta’s languishing economy and take on opponents of the oil sands.

The province’s economy has been suffering from a downturn in the oil industry for the past five years and those problems deepened last year when Alberta crude prices hit record lows. However, oil prices have been inching upwards in recent months, in part due to government-mandated production cuts designed to clear a large glut of oil in storage tanks.

The new premier has said he would use his first cabinet meeting on Tuesday to proclaim legislation, which was passed by the previous NDP government but never enacted, that would allow Alberta to turn off oil and gas shipments to B.C. Ed Whittingham, a prominent environmental policy expert who Mr. Kenney promised to fire from his position on the Alberta Energy Regulator board stepped down this past weekend. Mr. Whittingham, who was targeted for his previous work running the Pembina Institute, said in his resignation letter that he could no longer “support the new government’s tactics and policy direction.”
