Premier Jason Kenney heads to Ottawa Thursday for a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as tension flares between Alberta-British Columbia over the balance between new pipelines and current fuel supplies.

“It’s regrettable that Bill 12 was available,” B.C. Premier John Horgan said Wednesday at a news conference in Victoria.B.C. wants a court order suspending the legislation, and also filed a statement of claim. Bill 12 is intended to “inflict economic pain on British Columbia by limiting the supply of petroleum products to British Columbia in response to political or policy positions,” said one of the court documents.

The B.C. premier said there’s a path forward for Ottawa and the two provincial governments, referencing a phone conversation he had with Kenney Tuesday night. NDP Leader Rachel Notley said when her government introduced the legislation, the intent was to proclaim it and then enact it within three hours if necessary. On Wednesday, she called Kenney’s move “political posturing.”
