Wallabies captain Will Skelton says he trusts that Eddie Jones did not take part in an interview with the Japan Rugby Football Union before Australia’s World Cup campaign.
The Japan Rugby Football Union has refused to confirm whether Eddie Jones took part in a Zoom interview with officials just days before the Wallabies’ World Cup campaign.
Asked twice at his post-match media conference if he could give Australian rugby fans his full guarantee that he would not be coaching Japan next year, Jones replied, “I’m committed to coach Australia”. A day after Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh admitted he had not contacted his Japanese counterparts to ask whether they had met with Jones, the JRFU did not deny an interview took place.“JRFU won’t disclose any information about candidates [name of individual or the progress] until we decide and announce the new head coach, so unfortunately there is no comment from us so far because it’s not been decided,” a JRFU spokesperson told this masthead.
Jones, who has told Waugh the report had no substance to it, threatened to walk out of his post-match press conference on Sunday evening when asked about his commitment to Australian rugby.Herald’sThe issue has the potential to divide the Wallabies ahead of their final pool match against Portugal.“It wasn’t addressed and no, I don’t think it was a distraction,” Skelton said. “That’s something that has been knocked on the head there.
