Infrastructure collaboration, energy security and threats from China, North Korea and Russia will top the agenda when Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida meets Anthony Albanese on the weekend in Perth.
with Australia aimed specifically at addressing threats posed by China in the region when Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visits Perth this week for talks with Anthony Albanese.and greater infrastructure co-operation, a senior aide to Mr Kishida said tackling regional threats from China as well as Russia and North Korea which fired a missile over Japan two weeks ago would top the agenda.
“Everyone is watching what will happen to our defence budget which will become more concrete towards the end of December.”As well as talks between the two prime ministers, Mr Albanese will also meet with senior executives from Japanese energy companies. Japan wants to boost investment in Australian green energy projects but is also concerned about the security of coal and gas supplies.
The former Morrison government signed a Reciprocal Access Agreement with Japan in January, which allows the partners to host each other’s military forces and step up joint training. Mr Kishida and Mr Albanese were also expected to discuss potential co-operation between Japanese and Australian companies to build infrastructure and other projects, such as smart cities, in South-East Asia and the Pacific where China is also seeking to increase its influence.
