It’s possible Glover knows more about Mozart than any other living person. Even if not, her credentials are impeccable. Among her many other appointments and accolades, she served as artistic director of the London Mozart Players for seven years, a relationship preserved on multiple recordings. A quick YouTube search of “Jane Glover Mozart” yields several thrilling clips from Chicago’s Music of the Baroque, where Glover has been music director since 2002.
“The fact that it’s sort of quite heavily scored for him is exciting, and yet it never feels heavy in the way that some of Beethoven does,” Glover says. “It never feels imposing, it’s always light on its feet, and I just think it’s infinitely delightful and exhilarating.” The program will conclude with a real treat for Mozart lovers: excerpts from the rarely done incidental music for “Thamos of Egypt,” a play by the Viennese baron Tobias Philipp von Gebler. It is not known if Mozart’s music was ever performed with the play during his lifetime, but it provides a fascinating window into a period a few years before his great operas, when he lacked a regular patron and was very much itching to prove himself.“He hasn't got access to a theater,” Glover adds.
