It’s not exactly clear where the wrongthink ends and the national security threats begin

Hate crimes are a matter of policing, while intelligence and national security are the domain of CSIS. They interact, but they are not the same. The blurry limits of intelligence monitoring are concerning: If questioning COVID policies and immigration is deserving of counter-terrorism attention like DAESH, a re-orientation of priority is in order.

Concern for ideological violence is a reasonable reaction to the horror in Quebec, but it’s not clear that ideological extremism deserves half of Canada’s counter-terrorism resources. The spy agency’s new interest in the ideological views of Canadians should be supported by a clear case to the public.
