He's famous for roles in some of Australia's finest movies, from Breaker Morant to Wake in Fright. But it was the year he spent in the territory outback as a teenager that Jack Thompson says had an impact that has 'lasted me my life'.
A 14-year-old boy dreaming of a distant world that exists within his own country jumps on a train and heads deep into the Australian outback.
What he discovers out there is eye opening, formative, and something he carries inside him for the rest of his lifetime. "I flew to Adelaide and then caught The Ghan up to Alice Springs," Thompson told the ABC in a sitdown interview this week."I was in the back of the ute, an old international harvester ute with the cover over me, and we drove the 110 miles on the Sandover to Elkedra Station.
Out on the vast Elkedra Station, with its 15,000 head of cattle, Thompson was the lone white boy among the stock camp of around 12 Alyawarre stockmen."They recognised that I had no idea of anything to do with cattle, and very little idea of what to do with horses."In a winding lecture, told entirely without notes, Thompson shared tales of adventure and lessons learned from toiling in the territory sun and sleeping on the ground under the stars, alongside the Alyawarre.
