Socialist left ally of Daniel Andrews is seen as his successor, but factional battles for deputy leader are expected on Wednesday
While Andrews and Allan are both members of the socialist left faction, the two most senior positions in the party are usually shared by the left and right of the party. Guardian Australia understands many Labor MPs are urging a return to this convention.
Ministers Lily D’Ambrosio, Mary-Anne Thomas and Gabrielle Williams, who are all members of the left, are also said to be considering the deputy position, though even those within their own faction are urging caution. “To go down the other route – even if the left have the numbers for it – will hurt us in the long-term.”
