The Whitecaps supporters groups — and their Portland Timbers opposite numbers — all plan to continue with their 35th minute walkout protest during Friday’s game at B.C. Place.
For the third time at B.C. Place Stadium, members of the Vancouver Whitecaps supporters groups will walk out of a game in mass protest — and this time, it’s in one of the biggest games of the season.
There has been public outcry over the handling of the accusations by both the Whitecaps and Canadian Soccer Association, with a blog post from former player Ciara McCormack going viral and the fan walkouts attracting media attention from around the world. Many season ticket holders have either cancelled or plan to cancel their packages, with many also refusing to buy team merchandise, unfollowing the team’s social media accounts, and limiting their in-stadium purchases of food and beverages to further impact the bottom line.
The team is also still feeling the effects of a 2017 scandal that saw a sexual assault involving minors head to the court system. “They must not be losing enough money or reputation to make a meaningful change. They have done the math and are happy to ride out the current discontent. They probably think that the people cancelling tickets and what not are just the malcontents, and can be replaced.
