Nobody can tell how this team will perform, how it will look, nor how it will succeed. Even Saturday’s Major League Soccer season opener in Vancouver against the Minnesota United won’t provide any answers, just clues to how the season might unfold.
“I was talking about it with my staff that, at the end of the day, Jon Erice didn’t play one MLS game, but he played 400 in Spain. Erik Godoy didn’t play one MLS game, but he has more than 100 games in the first division in Argentina. “I feel good about where we are, and I’m confident about the spirit — especially in the last two days. You can feel that it’s coming, the competition day. You could feel it amongst the group.”
Aside from the language barrier he has with his teammates — though his English has improved rapidly, and an interpreter is always available — there’s moving to a league where the players generally have larger, heavier frames and tilts more to the athletic over the technical.“I don’t understand sometimes that term, the ‘physicality’ of the MLS,” he said. “I know it’s mentioned a lot.
The biggest problem — especially for the well-travelled Whitecaps, the perennial Air Miles champion of the MLS — is how they adjust to travel. For players such as Hwang or winger Lass Bangoura, their previous travel has been limited to bus rides measured in hours, rather than plane rides measured by days at times.
“We have a very diverse roster with a lot of different options, and I think it allows us to play in different systems.”
