The scorecard shows wages are not keeping pace with the cost of living – and not just because of inflation. Median wages have fallen in real terms since 2019. “It’s not great. Canadian families will tell you that,” she said. “That’s people’s purchasing power.”
Raitt said workers are not working shorter hours, so the suspicion is that they are not being given the tools needed to raise their productivity. That appears to be borne out by data that says research and development as a percentage of GDP and the percentage of output spent on machinery are both stagnant. “Business investment has been a concern of every government,” she said.Article content
