His conclusion is that good leaders combine a number of key attributes — ambition, integrity, humility, knowledge and empathy. On public policy, he notes that Canadian leaders have been inventive at shaping sound laws and regulations but have been less adept at getting things done. He is particularly critical of complacency when it comes to being satisfied with bronze, rather than going for gold.
D’Aquino details malaises like regional divisions, Western alienation and the rise of extremism, and is particularly critical of the failure to match words with deeds when it comes to our defence posture.
