Lifesize Victorious Youth is at centre of a years-long dispute, with Italy claiming it was illegally bought by US trust
A European court has ruled that Italy has every right to reclaim a 2,000-year-old Greek statue from the Getty Museum in California.
The ECHR ruling was a chamber judgment, meaning that both sides now have three months to ask for the case to be referred to the court’s grand chamber for a final ruling. Italy has always maintained that the statue was smuggled out of the country and acquired illegally, making the first formal request for its return from the US in 1989.
