For over 40 years here in Nova Scotia, my home place is where many have come together to honour the tradition of gathering in friendship and to savor tastes from authentic Ukrainian foods prepared from old cookbooks and time-honored recipes. His sister, my late Auntie Eleanor Kuzminski, talked to me about how the family traveled from Halifax by train, and about their journey across a new landscape thousands of miles from the life they had to leave behind to flee war-torn Europe. Hopes and dreams shattered. Fear for the unknown. Often in great danger, even in their travels to get from the Atlantic to the tip of the Great Lakes.

Digby-Annapolis MLA Jill Balser, also the province’s Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration, and her father Gordon Balser, a former MLA of the area, enjoyed the event. CONTRIBUTED - ContributedThe biggest takeaway of Digby's Ukrainian Christmas Potluck was that it was a happy day. The Legion was alive with the spirit of Christmas in the air. Santa arrived and delivered hugs everywhere. Live music by Myra LeBlanc got the folks up dancing.

A group in Bear River sent over flats of tomatoes and two foreign students studying here in Digby put them into take-home baggies. The Royal Bank sent gifts of coloring books and crayons for children and gave Santa directions. My heartfelt thank you to every person who gave and showed support and came out for the fun and joy of it.
