In that game, Marner extended his point streak to a team record 22 games and scored the overtime winner. He should be a Selke Trophy candidate as the league’s best defensive forward and might be in the running for the Hart with the way he’s playing. Matthews also scored, and Nylander had a five-point night.
The Leafs are third in the NHL while resourcefully dealing with so many injuries that they have already used 30 skaters and dressed four goalies. Boston, in first, has used 25 skaters and three goalies; No. 2 New Jersey has used 21 skaters and three goalies. Winning the Cup is the ultimate achievement in the NHL. No one disputes that. And when the Leafs are slagged for failing in the second season, they deserve it.
