It’s not London Underground’s priority seats that need the makeover, it’s our attitudes
– but more than that, as human beings – we should be ashamed of this fact. We shouldn’t need TfL to launch a Priority Seating Week to remind people to ‘look up’ and consider others when travelling. It’s no secret that you have to be a bit more selfish on the tube. It’s every man for himself once you’ve rushed down the stairs towards the platform.
Multiple times a week I watch young, able-bodied people push past those with children, or who are struggling to walk, so they can get the last seat on a carriage and relax for a while on their phones.Yes, life can be hectic, and you want to get to your destination as quickly as possible, but why should we forget common decency in the process?
These new seat makeovers don’t just highlight where priority seating is located, they highlight a bigger issue. More to the point, there shouldn’t just be specific seats labelled as priority ones – every seat should be a priority seat.Mark Evers, TfL’s chief customer officer, said: ‘While priority seats are highlighted, as they are within close proximity to the doors and have assistance poles, we would encourage customers to give up any seat if someone needs it more.’
