In what is sure to see a big turnout, Queensland will host NSW at Suncorp Stadium in the opening round of the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season.
Australian Rugby’s oldest rivalry will kickstart the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season, with Queensland to host New South Wales at Suncorp Stadium in round one on February 24.
Filipo Daugunu of the Reds celebrates scoring a try during the round one Super Rugby AU match against the New South Wales Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium in 2021.A fierce showdown between two bitter rivals has been deemed the perfect kick-off for a competition fighting for audience.“It’s the oldest rivalry in rugby, and the fact that we can do that in round one at Suncorp Stadium under a new coach in Les Kiss and a new era for Queensland rugby is a great start.
Fittingly, the former Maroons State of Origin winger will begin his time as Queensland coach with an interstate clash.“For a bloke from regional Queensland, in Bundaberg, to get one over New South Wales in the opening round would be a great way to start his coaching career at the Reds,” Hanham said. Despite playing two matches in North Queensland this season, all seven home games next year will be played at the Reds’ regular ground, Suncorp Stadium. The state union has done plenty to nurture the regions in recent years – three games in Townsville since 2021 and the annual Reds to Regions tour, which has seen players visit rural areas during the off-season to grow the game.
