Doctors say the pandemic caused many to neglect routine vaccinations for easily preventable diseases like tuberculosis, syphilis, pertussis (whooping cough), mumps and measles.
A surge in “retro” conditions that are typically rare in Canada highlights how people neglecting routine vaccinations is leading to higher infection rates and in some cases outbreaks, according to an infectious diseases expert.
“We would usually consider pertussis to be very rare in Canada … Pertussis seems very retro, but we’re seeing a lot of retro diseases these days and it seems like bad sign —, syphilis, pertussis, it’s like an infectious diseases textbook from the turn of the century.” Saxinger said pertussis is a bacterial cough illness that is “at best rather miserable and at worse fatal for babies.” It starts with a runny nose, cough, sneezing and fever. Over the course of a week, the cough becomes more severe and repetitive. In younger children, the spells are typically followed by a “whooping” sound when inhaling.
“There’s this period of intense vulnerability, which is why the way to prevent neonatal deaths, the baby deaths, is to vaccinate the moms so that the babies have some passive immunity,” Saxinger said.
