Alberta Health Services data shows there were 701 frostbite diagnoses at Calgary-area emergency departments and urgent-care centres in the 2021-22 fiscal year. “There’s an increased risk of infection, wounds start opening up, especially if they’ve had frostbite before. Things like pneumonia can come. And if they’ve had frostbite and the tissue starts dying, they can also be at risk for amputation.” For The Mustard Seed, an increase in frostbite has been visible at the organization’s shelters and during its street outreach.But some people experiencing homelessness are hesitant to access services or medical care, said Samantha Lowe, the non-profit’s director of health and wellness, who recalled a time when the Mustard Seed outreach team met 12 people with frostbite and referred them to care, but only one said they would follow up.
