'It is a true victory that the funding will not be cut,” said David Jones with the Dartmouth Heritage Museum. The museum’s annual $100,000 grant was on the list of optional cuts in the $34 million Parks and Recreations budget.

“Now the staff can go forward with all their plans for new exhibits in co-operation with different groups and people with different backgrounds, and they have their jobs.”

On Wednesday, when councillors picked through the parks and rec budget, instead of cutting, councillors added funding.Artists argued that the option to cut $300,000 to professional arts grants would be damaging and reckless. “We heard passionately and clearly from the arts community this week and many of us have promised in the past to continue to increase funding.”

If council is aiming to create a great city where people want to live and work, they can’t do that with having the lowest national investment in arts and culture, said Coun. Pam Lovelace .“I think this is not just pro-arts, it’s pro-business, it’s pro-community. It’s pro-everything we want to see ourselves as – that may feel like artsy words, but I just feel that this is so important that we do this,” he said.

“I think it’s something to be used strategically, certainly I wouldn’t want everything to be sponsored and named, but we do have an opportunity here with this brand new aquatics centre,” said Coun. Lisa Blackburn .
