As Australia nervously waits for news on Nathan Lyon's calf injury, key figures have thrown their support behind back-up spinner Todd Murphy.

The 36-year-old pulled up short when charging in to attempt a catch at deep backward square, immediately clutching at his calf.

Lyon's injury came after he took the sole wicket in England's innings until that point, outsmarting Zak Crawley on 48 and having him stumped down legside. "It's a role. Batters I suppose there's loads of us around so it's a bit different. Obviously Nathan, if he's no good, he'd be a huge loss," Smith said.

"I'd be confident if he came in he'd do a terrific job for us, but fingers crossed Nathan's alright."
