When the River Murray began to rise, the Schultz family built a fence from vineyard posts, bits of tin and shade cloth to save their home — and it worked.

abc.net.au/news/fence-saves-riverland-home-from-river-murray-flooding/102457024A medieval-style fence built out of vineyard posts, sheets of tin and shade cloth saved a family home from the biggest River Murray flood in 66 years.

Mr Schultz knew they risked being swept away in the middle of the night, but held faith in his craftsmanship. As water levels rose, the family continuously fortified their defences, collecting more building materials from the nearest non-flooded road and transferring them on top of two canoes they strapped together.

"Someone said to me, 'Good on you, you've had a crack, you've done the best you can do and if it doesn't work at least you've tried'," he said."One bloke said to me that it made him proud to be Australian when he saw what we had done – that was nice."
