Last night, Carlton won against the best team of 2022 in a close one. Of course, it should never have been close.

Fourteen minutes into the last quarter and Ollie Hollands runs diagonally backwards under a long Geelong ball into the Cats’ forward line. If he didn’t see him, he could sense Jeremy Cameron coming at him.

Carlton defeated Geelong 13.12 to 12.10 . Carlton’s win might have been set up by Charlie Curnow’s five goals, by Adam Saad’s tireless run from half-back, Matt Kennedy and Adam Cerra’s work around the ball and Jacob Weitering calmness in defence, but it was saved from theft by Geelong by moments like Hollands in the last quarter.

They were not without error - Mitch McGovern’s kick-in straight to Cameron for one of this last-quarter goals was a howler - but in the main they got their critical moments right.Last week those pieces unwound Carlton’s lead against Richmond; this week they saved them from the ignominy of carrying the growing burden of being the team that doesn’t know how to win the close games.

“It had to be that way, it just had to be that way. I said that to the players afterwards. It just had to be that way, really tough at the end and we got the correction we were after, which was really pleasing,” Voss said. “Today I thought we had great balance in our game. Our contest was A-plus but also balance on both sides of the ball was pretty good tonight.

The Voice to ‘draw a line in the sand’ and ‘close the gap’The Voice to ‘draw a line in the sand’ and ‘close the gap’The Voice to Parliament referendum will provide a change, improving the lives of Indigenous people and helping to finally close the gap, according to the Referendum Working Group's Professor Marcia Langton. The Voice will reflect all the recommendations and improvements which the government didn’t adopt over the years, Professor Langton said. “It is so infrequently that our recommendations are adopted, this is why we cannot report on many improvements in the closing the gap indicators,” Professor Langton said. “We’re here to draw a line in the sand and say this has to change – people’s lives have to improve and we know from the evidence that what improves people’s lives is when they get a say and that’s what this is about.”
