Songlines, sometimes referred to as dreaming tracks, link sites and hold stories, known as story places, which are read into the natural features of the land.Aotearoa New Zealand has had a treaty in place for almost two centuries but it wasn't until the 1970s that it was truly honoured. So what happened?The stories at significant sites contain knowledge that instruct on social behaviour, gender relations or where water or food can be sourced.

For example, the seven sisters flew in advance of their pursuer over a particular tract of Country. This story — about where they flew and could not walk — tells you not to walk there as there is no water. Natural formations such as mountains, caves and waterholes act as memory aids to the story of their creation and the lessons embedded, also known as mnemonics.
