The Albanese government will commit an extra $3.25 billion to the North East Link, an infrastructure project to link major arterial roads in Melbourne that has blown out by more than $10 billion. The funding will be included in next week’s federal budget, the Herald Sun reported on Thursday, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the money would make the city’s fast-growing northeast had the infrastructure it needed.
Infrastructure Minister Catherine King confirmed the move while speaking to ABC Radio Melbourne on Thursday morning, saying the North East Link would take 15,000 trucks off suburban roads, and would get the city moving “as best we can”. “This has been a really missing link in our road network,” she said. The link will be built between the Eastern Freeway and the M80 Ring Road in Greensborough, and is expected to open in 2028.
