Foreign Minister Penny Wong says a two-state solution is needed as a pathway to a lasting peace, and criticised the actions of both Israel and Hamas.
Already a subscriber?The Australian government has thrown its support behind the recognition of Palestinian statehood as a stepping stone to a two-state solution, arguing it is the only durable way to “build a pathway out of this endless violence”.
“The Greens political party is willing to purposely amplify disinformation, exploiting distress in a blatant and cynical play for votes – with no regard for the social disharmony they are fuelling,” she said.Senator Wong backed growing efforts in the international community, including countries such as Britain, to recognise a Palestinian state.This week the United Nations Security Council referred Palestine’s bid to become a full member of the UN to a committee.
“Second, because there is no role for Hamas in a future Palestinian state. Hamas is a terrorist organisation, which has the explicit intent of the destruction of the state of Israel and the Jewish people. “Clearly, if it is to be undertaken, it must be undertaken with extreme care, caution and regard for international law to make sure that the terrible and difficult humanitarian situation that exists is not compounded.”Mr Netanyahu has confirmed, but declined to disclose, that a date has been set for a ground offensive in Rafah, where about 1.4 million displaced Palestinians are sheltering.
