The government could not say whether a graffiti attack on a Jewish school would be covered by proposed new hate laws.
The political schism created by the Israel-Hamas conflict is widening with the Coalition yet to be convinced of the efficacy of proposed new race hate laws while, at the same time, demanding the government back a judicial inquiry into rampant antisemitism on university campuses.
Nationals leader David Littleproud said the new laws, proposed on the weekend by Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, made sense in-principle, but he questioned why existing laws against vilification had not been used amid an“There already are laws in place that have criminal aspects to it, and I think the government needs to articulate why they haven’t been utilised,” he said.
Liberal MP Julian Leeser, who will move a private members bill to establish a judicial inquiry into antisemitism on campus, called on the Albanese government to take the lead and implement the probe itself.
