A stern warning to Israel’s ambassador not to escalate the war was delivered with the safety of up to 20,000 Australians in Lebanon in mind.
The Albanese government is drawing up plans to evacuate up to 20,000 Lebanese-Australians from Lebanon should war break out between Israel and the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah.
“In that meeting, there was an expression about our concern in seeing the conflict in the Middle East escalate, and particularly escalate in respect of Lebanon,” Mr Marles said. “We are striking Hezbollah very hard every day and we will also reach a state of full readiness to take any action required in Lebanon, or to reach an arrangement from a position of strength,” Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said.Mr Maimon was summoned to a meeting with Mr Watts a week ago and told not to expect Australian backing for a ground war with Hezbollah, according to a report by News Corp.
