The Day for Truth and Reconciliation — originally called Orange Shirt Day — honours the survivors and victims of the Indian residential school system, which separated Indigenous youth from their families across Canada between 1831 and 1996. She gave examples of First Nations people who are struggling financially or otherwise, and who are asking for help.
While it won’t be possible this weekend, Jenkins also spoke about the blanket ceremony, which uses blankets to create an interactive map of Mi'kma'ki before, during and after settlement.
