Doreen Jenkins, a Mi’kmaw elder whose five siblings attended the Shubenacadie Residential School, says she was booked to say a prayer at Abegweit First Nation’s ceremony for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 20, but the event was cancelled due to damage caused by post-tropical storm Fiona the week before. - Logan MacLean • The GuardianROCKY POINT, P.E.I. — Doreen Jenkins was supposed to be a part of a ceremony in Abegweit First Nation this weekend. The Day for Truth and Reconciliation — originally called Orange Shirt Day — honours the survivors and victims of the Indian residential school system, which separated Indigenous youth from their families across Canada between 1831 and 1996. She gave examples of First Nations people who are struggling financially or otherwise, and who are asking for help.

While it won’t be possible this weekend, Jenkins also spoke about the blanket ceremony, which uses blankets to create an interactive map of Mi'kma'ki before, during and after settlement.
