Within metropolitan Sydney, where a peak-hour service is considered late if it arrives five minutes after it is scheduled, lines servicing the western suburbs recorded the higher late rates
Sydney’s western suburbs and intercity services fared worst in a year of disrupted train travel as Sydney commuters returned to the office while peak-hour services on some lines ran late a quarter of the time.in 2022, as seen in data from Transport for NSW’s performance reports from January to November.
The T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line had the highest proportion of trains running on time, with 89 per cent of trains to Bondi Junction and 87 per cent of those heading south on schedule. Across the network, services were on schedule 85 per cent of the time from January to November. The network met the department’s 92 per cent punctuality target during two months only: January and May., when an industrial dispute between the Rail, Tram and Bus Union and the state government resulted in thousands of services being cancelled. This was followed by July, when a combination of wet weather and ongoing industrial action affected services.
