John Van Dyk felt his blood pressure spike as he watched a fellow Ontario farmer dump 30,000 litres of raw milk down a drain. The spectacle, on full display through the screen of his smartphone, became the subject of awhere another dairy producer explains why he has to waste copious amounts of milk due to Canada’s supply management system.
“We’re not all like this,” said Van Dyk, a second-generation dairy farmer who’s been running his business for 37 years. “But it doesn’t seem like the is inching toward any change. That is concerning because people are watching. … This is something people will watch and they won’t forget.”to demand that milk dumping be stopped on farms. Since its launch on Feb. 8, more than 2,300 people have signed in support.
