The flags of Iran and of the UAE fly above a building at the complex housing Iran’s consulate headquarters in Dubai on April 5, 2023. AFPPIXThe foreign ministers of Middle East rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia met in Beijing on Thursday, Tehran said, paving the way for normalised ties under a surprise China-brokered deal.
Saudi state TV Al Ekhbariya also reported that the two ministers held a meeting in Beijing to “discuss implementing the agreement”, airing footage of the pair shaking hands in front of Saudi and Iranian flags, and then talking and smiling. During phone conversations in March, the ministers had vowed to meet during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan which ends later in April.
Saudi Arabia severed relations with Iran in January 2016, after protesters attacked its embassy in Tehran and consulate in the Iranian city of Mashhad over Riyadh's execution of the Saudi opposition Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr. China's success in bringing Iran and Saudi Arabia together has challenged the United States' long standing role as the main outside power broker in the Middle East.
He added that the agreement can “increase cooperation between the countries of the Persian Gulf and the Islamic world to manage the existing challenges.”
