Gay rights activist and Stonewall Riots survivor Martin Boyce is set to deliver a keynote to students from Grades 7 to 12 virtually and in-person at York Mills Collegiate Institute.
Wednesday is the International Day of Pink — a day similar to Pink Shirt Day that seeks to end anti-LGBTQ+ bullying — and some Toronto schools are marking the occasion with an assembly to commemorate the Stonewall Riots and the birth of World Pride.
Deputy mayor Jennifer McKelvie will be in attendance, along with Colleen Russell-Rawlins, the director of education for the TDSB; Isaiah Shafqat, an Indigenous student trustee; Srgt. Robert Chevalier, the 2SLGBTQ+ liaison for Toronto Police; and Omid Razavi, the executive director of It Gets Better Canada.
After witnessing the attack, two students decided they’d do something about it. They consulted with school staff and then purchased dozens of pink T-shirts, which they distributed in school, and as news of the event spread, neighbouring schools began to follow suit.
