The Matildas have lost for the first time at the FIFA Women's World Cup going down to a classy Nigerian outfit 3-2.

An injury-depleted Matildas side took on Nigeria at Brisbane Stadium in front of the biggest ever Queensland crowd gathered for a women’s football match. The game was far more expansive than the first group stage match with Nigeria taking a much less structured approach compared to the Irish.

Despite not starting a Matildas game for almost a year Van Egmond’s selection proved to be a masterstroke with the recalled forward scoring the opener on the back of an intercepted Nigerian goal kick. The words run true as Australia took advantage of the extra space left by the Nigerians who were far less structured than the Irish. Nigeria began to link up more effectively in the second half and the Matildas' defence found themselves on the back foot more often. The corner was sent towards the penalty spot and it was headed to the near post before being sent back across goal for Osinachi Ohale who headed it home to take a 2-1 lead.

Nigeria's Uchenna Kanu hit back immediately after .the Matildas goal.
