For the birds: Homeowner Glenn Ayrton now plans to install bird\u002Dsafe stickers to prevent future bird\u002Dbuilding collisions.
At first, he thought it was an earthquake. Or a beam breaking. The mysterious thump turned out to be a case of fowl play: Two birds had hit the glass railing on the upstairs deck.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m., Monday to Friday.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
Worried the hawk might not make it, Ayrton phoned 911, which routed him to different agencies until he was connected with the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society . The injured Cooper’s Hawk was put in a cage by a volunteer with the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society.Four days later, the 456-gram hawk — which turned out to be a she — is recuperating well at OWL’s Delta facility, said general manager Rob Hope.
The centre still has to wait to see how the hawk hunts next week to make sure there’s no hidden or sustained injury. Once it’s OK, it plans to re-release it back into its habitat, launching it from Ayrton’s deck, likely next week. And while many people might not be keen to give up the light or views from their windows or decks, Hope said the stickers are subtle.
