'Catcalling and groping are endemic issues and we want to empower victims to challenge them'
An initiative inspired by a New York-based campaign against catcalling is hoping to help bring an end to the abusive practice on the streets of Dublin.
IrishStar.com writes that contributors to the American campaign's Instagram page message moderators, detailing street harassment they experienced and what was said to them. The campaigners then go to the locations of where the harassment took place and quote the abuser in chalk on the ground, regardless of the offensiveness of language used.
She said: "The campaign is a protest against street harassment, calling particular attention to catcalling and groping. We have a Google Form which people can fill out, telling us where they were catcalled and what was said. "There have been some negative comments but not that many. We feel that these stem from misunderstanding more than malice."
According to a recent study from Maryfield College and Amarach Research, roughly 60% of women under the age of 20 have been the subject of catcalling – such as whistling, jeering or sexual comments – during the previous week.
