Police were assaulted and residents left terrified in New York City as hundreds of fans rushed to an iconic location on Friday after a social media influencer with 20 million followers told fans he would be giving away gaming consoles and computers.
Kai Cenat, 21, who has millions of followers across his social media platforms, had announced he was doing a giveaway for his fans at Union Square Park on Friday.
Social media influencer Kai Cenat, 21, had organised a giveaway event in New York City before it turned into chaos, with his followers clashing with police and damaging property. “[The] NYPD became aware at about 1:30pm of a crowd forming in Union Square. It was quickly determined that an influencer was posting on social media about showing up to Union Square. He was encouraging all of his followers to come to the park,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeff Maddrey said in a press conference after the incident.
It has been reported the crowd quickly grew to about 2,000 people, with some of them photographed throwing bottles, rocks, fireworks and even pot plants at police. "It was a very dangerous situation. We were in there, we were crushed, we were pushed," Chief Maddrey also said in the press conference.
