The ABC has projected independent Jacqui Scruby will win the traditionally blue-ribbon electorate, which was thrust into a by-election after Liberal Rory Anon quit parliament in August after being charged with child-sex offences, which he denies.
Independent Jacqui Scruby is set to become the first teal MP in the NSW parliament, with the candidate on track to snatch the Sydney Northern Beaches seat of Pittwater .
With more than 62 per cent of the vote counted, the ABC projected Ms Scruby to win after a 6 per cent swing against Liberal candidate Georgia Ryburn in the traditionally blue-ribbon electorate. Mr Amon quit parliament in August after being charged with child sex offences, which he denies, triggering a by-election."I'm very excited but also don't want to do anything too early because I have been here before."
In her pitch to voters, Ms Scruby argued a crossbencher would have more influence than an opposition MP as Labor was governing in minority."A strong, independent voice can bring issues to the parliament and really push the major parties to do better," she said. While Liberal candidate Georgia Ryburn was not conceding defeat on Saturday night, she told the party faithful "the path to victory is difficult".
"Before we'd even had a rigorous and democratic preselection process, the teal campaign was well underway.During the campaign, Ms Scruby portrayed her Liberal opponent as an outsider because she lived outside the Pittwater electorate."What hurt me the most was the relentless attacks on me not being a local," she said."We have taken the high road and run a solid campaign.
