Newfoundland and Labrador's Chief Medical Officer of Health warns residents about the increase in pertussis cases and urges them to stay up to date on their whooping cough vaccinations.

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Newfoundland and Labrador’s Chief Medical Officer of Health is urging residents to stay up to date on their whooping cough vaccinations as an increase in pertussis cases sweeps the province.

As a highly contagious and airborne respiratory infection, the CMOH is warning of potential severe health complications if contracted, especially in vulnerable populations and non-fully vaccinated infants. Typically beginning with cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, mild fever and cough, some patients may experience severe prolonged coughing, often accompanied by a distinctive ‘whooping’ sound during inhalation, which can persist for up to eight weeks and may result in hospitalization.

Adults are recommended to receive a booster dose of the vaccine at least 10 years after their adolescent vaccination. Anyone currently pregnant is advised to get the vaccine between 27 and 32 weeks of pregnancy to pass on protective antibodies to their newborns.
