One of the most spectacular displays of aurora borealis in recent memory rippled across North America and Europe Friday night, visible evidence of a powerful geomagnetic storm that began bombarding Earth with high speed particles from the sun starting around midday Eastern Time.
In Canadian locations where skies were clear, viewers were treated to a cascade of shifting rays and curtains of light that emerged as soon as twilight darkened. For those lucky enough to be far from city lights the phenomenon was easily captured on cell phone cameras, with many posting their results on social media. According to the U.S.
Aurora borealis are produced when particles that are energized by the solar storm collide with the molecules of oxygen and nitrogen that make up the bulk of Earth’s atmosphere. While northern lights are common in Canada’s north, Friday’s event took place over a vastly expanded area including places where aurorae are rarely seen, such as Texas and Spain. In the Great Lakes region, the aurorae at times blanketed the sky from horizon to horizon, offering viewers the show of a lifetime.
