Significant damages across the town, comfort centres to be opened
Salmon River in Truro, overflowing with the rainfall from hurricane Fiona.TRURO, N.S. — Hurricane Fiona hit Nova Scotia early Saturday morning, uprooting trees from the ground, downing power lines and causing flooding.
As of Saturday afternoon, there were more than 5,000 customers in the Truro and Bible Hill area without power, according to theHurricane Fiona caused significant property damage, including Angel's Diner in Great Village. The Municipality of Colchester has put out a statement over social media and AlertTC, telling residents of the county that the Colchester Emergency Coordination Centre is working to ensure public safety. The centre was activated at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 24.
The post also reported that community comfort centres would be opened once the roads are safe for travel. These centres will be able to provide power, heat and light for residents. A list of community comfort centres can be found atPark Street in Truro and the subway on Main Street in Bible Hill have been closed due to flooding. Many responders are out clearing fallen trees and debris.Environment Canada ended the weather alert for Hurricane Fiona in Truro at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday.
