BIG call, would you want him back in the NRL? 9WWOS NRL
Eighth Immortal Andrew Johns has given his take on the debate over whether rugby league should welcome back controversial rugby union star Israel Folau.
Folau had a successful NRL career from 2007-2010, playing almost 100 games for the Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm, with five State of Origin appearances for Queensland and eight caps for the Kangaroos. Following his couple of years in AFL in a highly publicised code-switch, Folau turned his back on a return to league in favour of union.
He began his rugby union career in 2013 with the NSW Waratahs and quickly became a genuine international star, and one of the biggest names in the Wallabies squad. Folau was given a breach of contract notice by Rugby Australia this week after he repeated homophobic and transphobic sentiments in social media posts last week, despite being warned about sharing such content when he first caused an uproar with similar comments on social media in April last year.
ARLC chairman Peter Beattie immediately shut down the possibility of Folau getting a chance to return to the NRL, although reports surfaced that suggested NRL CEO Todd Greenberg was more open to potentially allowing it.
