Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot is estimated to have greatly benefitted Thunder Bay’s economy and newcomers to Canada and the northwestern Ontario city in delivering 321 jobs within a year of being activated, according to a research paper from the Northern Policy Institute.
The federal Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot does not directly create jobs, but it does provide an immigration pathway to aid employers in attracting talent to fill vacant positions. RNIP is mutually beneficial program by giving smaller communities the opportunity to select which workers have the most desired skills by their local industries and are the most likely to settle and stay in that northern or rural community in the long term.

Thunder Bay Man Faces Charges After Collision Sends Two to HospitalA 21-year-old man from Thunder Bay is facing impaired and dangerous driving charges after a head-on collision between a pickup truck and an SUV. The collision resulted in two people being sent to the hospital, with one suffering serious injuries. Thunder Bay Man Arrested for Child Pornography ChargesA 39-year-old man from Thunder Bay has been arrested and charged with possession, accessing, and distribution of child pornography. The Thunder Bay Police Service's Cyber Crime Unit launched an investigation after receiving information about the suspect's alleged possession of digital files consistent with child pornography. A search warrant was executed at the suspect's residence, resulting in the seizure of several electronic devices. The suspect, Justin John Mach, had previously been convicted of possessing child pornography in 2016 and was sentenced to 16 months.
