A report of someone walking on the field at Cedar Hill Middle School with a firearm about 6:10 a.m. Monday led to a heavy police response.
It turned out a 19-year-old man had an airsoft gun that looked like a semi-automatic rifle, said Saanich police. They were told he had pointed the gun at one person and then headed toward a business complex before going into a covered parkade at Cedar Hill Road and McKenzie Avenue.The man, who is known to police, is facing one count of possession of a weapon.
“While we are still working on why this man was walking around with a weapon in public, we have no information to suggest he was targeting any person or location,” said Const. Markus Anastasiades, adding imitation firearms pose a significant risk to the public, as police treat them as real until proven otherwise.
“Imitation, airsoft, paint ball or similar weapons should never be carried in public or used in public spaces.”
