The Iloilo City Police Office (Icpo) and Bureau of Fire Protection Region in Western Visayas (BFB 6) intensified its proactive measures to secure a safe New Year celebration by conducting simultaneous inspections of designated firecracker and pyrotechnic zones on December 27, 2024. The inspections focused on two major sites in Barangay Buhang, Jaro District, and C5 Road, Arevalo District, Iloilo City, emphasizing strict adherence to safety guidelines and local regulations.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Lorenez Losaria, Deputy City Director for Operations, led the first team of inspectors at Barangay Buhang, around 4:40 p.m. He was accompanied by Police Captain Mary Jane Panes, Officer-in-Charge of Iloilo City Police Station (ICPS) 3, and personnel from the BFP 6. At approximately 4:45 p.m., a second team, spearheaded by Police Lieutenant Colonel Rene Obregon Jr., Chief of the City Operations and Management Unit, conducted a similar inspection at C5 Road, Arevalo District. Joining him were Police Captain Benjie Decin, Officer-in-Charge of ICPS 6; Senior Fire Officer 1 Alfer Anthony Malaca, of the Arevalo District Fire Substation; and Barangay Kagawad Jorge Sabio of Barangay Mohon, Arevalo District. Their presence aimed to verify compliance with Executive Order No. 160, Series of 2024, issued by Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, which outlines rules for managing the sale and distribution of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices. They checked safety measures implemented by stall owners, focusing on the presence of fire extinguishers, water, and fine sand to handle emergencies. According to Icpo Director Police Colonel Kim Legada, the checks covered multiple aspects of firecracker and pyrotechnic sales, including examining permits, verifying compliance with local ordinances, and ensuring vendors understood the prohibition on smoking, firecracker testing, and sales to minor
