The Department of Health in Ilocos Region reports a 17% decrease in fireworks-related injuries compared to the previous year. Despite the lower number of cases, one fatality was recorded.
The Department of Health in Ilocos Region (DOH-1) has recorded 105 fireworks-related injuries (FWRIs) from December 21, 2024 to January 1, 2025, or 17 percent lower than the 126 cases recorded during the same period in 2023. As of Wednesday, authorities recorded one casualty, same as last year. The fatality is a 44-year-old male from Dagupan City, who incurred an injury in his nasal area when he tried to light a firecracker during New Year 's revelry, said DOH-1 medical officer Dr.
Rheuel Bobis in a phone interview Thursday. Of the total number of FWRIs, Pangasinan registered the most cases with 55. This is however, 37 percent lower than the 88 cases a year ago. It was followed by La Union with 22, Ilocos Sur, 20, and Ilocos Norte, eight. All three provinces posted increases compared to the previous given period. Bobis attributed the current lower number of FWRIs to the effective campaign of national and local government offices against the use of illegal firecrackers and pyrotechnics in welcoming the New Year. 'The local government units and other national government agencies have come together to send a message to the people to avoid firecrackers and instead use alternative noisemakers,' he said. Bobis said 'boga,' an improvised cannon device, remained the leading cause of injuries comprising 30 percent, followed by five star firecracker, skyrocket, baby rocket, and whistle bomb, among others. Most of the victims sustained burn or blast injuries, he said. Bobis said hospitals in the region will remain under code white until January 6. 'The alert status ensures that all hospitals are totally prepared to deal with any medical emergencies during the long week-end,' he said. Code White Alert also 'puts all health professionals and health personnel and workers on standby to respond to medical emergencies at any time,' he added
