Opportunistic cyber criminals are using the recent Optus data breach to roll out a wide variety of scams, with reports of fake compensation claims, SIM card replacement requests, verification prompts, and general threats to customers. 7NEWS
, scammers are posing as the Optus billing department and security department, Medicare, and even as the hackers involved in the initial data breach.
The ACCC confirmed that Optus “is not contacting people about their bills and asking you to update your information.”The ACCC advises recipients of this message to “check your account independently or contact the organisation in a secure way”.“You can also call the organisation back using a phone number you have sourced independently, such as from the ‘Contact Us’ page on the organisation’s official website.
Password update emails notifying recipients of details due to expire that day, designed to appear like an automatically generated email, have also been flagged by the ACCC. The ACCC warned customers over password update prompts appearing as an automatically generated emails.Optus is not threatening email account closure if you do not update your password or verify your personal information, the regulator confirmed.Text messages claiming that because Optus has not responded to a $1 million ransom demand, a figure was now being demanded directly from the individual are another recently reported scam.
